Women's Basketball coach Chris Huss returned home to SC4 in 2016 after a 14-year hiatus when he left to coach girl's high school basketball.

Huss made his mark on the Blue Water Area right away as he took over the SC4 women's basketball program in 1994. In his first season, the team went straight to the NJCAA National Championship and lost in triple overtime. He calls that one of his favorite memories.

"That was a good game, we should've won it," he said. "The other team hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to put it into overtime."

A couple years later, he took his team to the 1997 State Championship game and won with a 79-67 victory over Lansing Community College. This 1996-97 team was recently inducted into the Skippers Half of Fame.

"That was a very good team too," Huss said. "Winning is a fun thing, especially when you win championships. It's nice when you get a group of talented players to play as a team, and that's what I try to teach — team basketball."

Val (Durand) Maher joined the team in 1995 and was part of the 1996-97 State Championship team. She said Huss was one of the many reasons for her good experience at SC4.

"He was a good leader. He had great success, obviously, with the National Championship his first year, and then when I was there, and even afterward," Maher said. "He recruited from winning programs in the area and we became a really tight knight group. He helped contribute to a good team atmosphere and build team unity."

Huss has maintained his leadership and character throughout his career, as current sophomore Brooklyn Taylor echoes much of what Maher had to say.

"I like that he is non-confrontational. He really likes to have everyone involved and really cares for the people," Taylor said. "He's kind and laid back and always open to suggestions, and he tells us if we need anything to let him know."

In 2002, Huss left the Skippers and began coaching the Capac High School girls' basketball team, where he also taught high school math. His tenure with the Chiefs included four conference championships, three district championships, and one regional championship.

Huss said the transition back to the junior college scene was more difficult than the first time around as the game has become much more competitive.

"I used to recruit just local kids, but now it's hard to even keep local kids here," he said. "And the competition is good — very competitive, very challenging, and of course, junior college is just hard because every year is so different."

With a new team each year, it's hard to get the athletes to come together and build team chemistry in such a short amount of time, but Huss works hard to develop his players and teams to the best of their abilities.

"I think junior college is the most challenging basketball you can coach because you've got all these good players, but you've got to get them to play together," Huss said.

But Huss embraces the challenge and says he enjoys coaching the Skippers.

"It's a great school heading in a positive direction," he said. "They're adding sports and I think with the new Fieldhouse it's a great improvement, and the administration is very supportive."
