Jose Ganhs – Men's Bowling

For Jose Ganhs, what began as a fun pastime has become something he takes great pride in and has given him many opportunities.

“I got started with bowling at a young age. I was five,” Ganhs said. “My parents took me to the bowling alley  it was like day care at the time. I’d go there, hang out with my friends, and have fun.”

From there, he became more seriously involved in the sport.

“I was in the youth leagues and all of that until high school when I found out our school was having a bowling team,” he said. “I made the team as a freshman, and then I took a year off until a friend asked me to come back, and I did.”

After years of working three jobs and only bowling in his spare time, Ganhs was granted a new opportunity.

“I was lucky enough to receive the opportunity to bowl for the college,” Ganhs said. “This is an opportunity for me to come to SC4 and put my college studies first, then bowling.”

Ganhs said he is studying to get a degree in business in hopes of operating his own local business someday.

Bowling is also an opportunity for Ganhs to connect with his family. As a father of two young kids, he says he enjoys taking them to the bowling alley.

“My daughter, who’s five, isn’t really that into it, but my son, who’s three, loves it,” Ganhs said. “I let him just throw the ball down the lane to see what he can do.”

One of his favorite memories in bowling involves his family as well, specifically his mother.

“My favorite memory would be the time I bowled a 300 while my mom was there to watch me,” he said. “My mom had never seen me bowl a 300. She normally sees it on a video later or when I call her to tell her about it, but that time she got to see it."

Ganhs has bowled plenty of 300 games in his career. He’s even in the Port Huron Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He’s achieved 22 300-games as well as five 800 series games, with his highest score being 827 points.

“I am trying to pursue bowling at the [Professional Bowlers Association] level, like the ones that you see on TV,” Ganhs said. “But I need a little bit more practice and confidence to do it.”
