Softball: One Bad Inning Costs SC4 Against Macomb

Port Huron, MI - The Skippers hosted Macomb Community College on a rainy Saturday (March 30) in which game 2 of the double header was postponed to a later date.

The game was back and forth for the first five innings as the Skippers tried to steal a game from the first place Monarchs. SC4 scored 3 in the first to take a 3-1 lead before Macomb matched them to tie it up in the second. A string of 1 run innings and a 2-run bottom of the fifth found SC4 up 6-5 heading to the sixth. That's when the Monarchs offense exploded for 16 runs in the top of the sixth inning including multiple home runs. The took a 21-6 lead before SC4 tried to mount a comeback but managed just 2 runs off a MaKynna Saltzman home run and would lose 21-8 in 6 innings.

MaKynna Saltzman led to the Skipper's attack going 3 for 3 with 23 runs. 2 RBIs, a walk and a home run. Brandi Bassett turned in a 2-3 day which included a home run, a double, and 5 RBIs. Sarah Fantin added in 2 hits and 2 runs, and Isabella Pesina added a double and an RBI.

Starting in the circle for the Skippers was Kaylie Rickert who looked good until the sixth inning. Her final line was 5.1 innings giving up 12 runs on 16 hits and no walks. She also struck out 1. MaKynna Saltzman relieved Rickert and pitched the final 0.2 of an inning and gave up 9 runs, 6 earned, while allowing 6 hits and 3 walks.

Game two of the double header was postponed due to inclement weather/field conditions and will be made up at a later date.

With this loss the Skippers fall to 9-12 overall and 4-3 in conference play which places them in 3rd place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference.

They will travel to Flint, MI and Kearsley Park to take on the Mott Community College Bears in a double header on Tuesday (Apr. 2) with first pitch at 3:00 PM.
