Softball: The Skippers Struggle at Madonna

Livonia, MI – The Skippers headed to Madonna university to play a non-conference double head on Tuesday (Apr. 9). Game one started at 3:00 PM.

It took a little while for the offenses to get warmed up for game one. Madonna put the first runs on the board when they scored 3 in the bottom of the third inning. They added 2 more in the bottom of the fifth. SC4 got one back in the top of the sixth but gave it right back in the bottom half. The top of the seventh the Skippers had their eyes set on a back but they would score 4 runs when they need 5 to tie the game. They lost game one 6-5.

Carley Kalbfleisch led the offense going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Alexis Perrin collected a double and scored a run while MaKynna Saltzman had a hit, run scored, and run batted in. Ashley Bassett reached base 2 times and scored a run and hit one in as well.

On the mound for the Skippers was sophomore Kaylie Rickert. She pitched all 6 innings and allowed 5 earned runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, and she struck out 3.

Game two was all Crusaders. They got the party going early with 7 runs in the first inning and that was as close as it was all game. They scored 2 more in the third and 6 in the fourth to run rule the Skippers 15-0 in five innings.

SC4 managed just 2 hits for the ball game. Alexis Perrin collected one of them in a 1 for 2 day and Brandi Bassett had the other, also going 1 for 2.

Brandi Bassett started the game in the circle for the Skippers going 4 innings allowing 9 runs, 6 of them earned, on 11 hits, 2 walks, but she struck out 5. Carley Kalbfleisch pitched in relief allowing 6 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, she did not record an out. Bassett reentered the game and finished it off.

These two losses drop the Skipper's regular season record to 12-16

They jump back into conference play on Friday (Apr. 12) when they travel to Schoolcraft College for a 1:00 PM first pitch.
