Softball: The Skips drop 2 games to the Ocelots

Marysville, MI – The Skippers hosted Schoolcraft College to Marysville City Park on Saturday (Apr. 27) for a Sophomore Day double header.

Game one started off slow and was tied at 0 entering the third inning. That's when Schoolcraft exploded for 5 runs. They added on 4 more in the top of the fourth inning. SC4 would get 1 back and trailed 9-1 through four innings. The Skippers would add another in the fifth but the Ocelots matched that in the sixth. The comeback was on as SC4 added 2 runs in the sixth and 3 in the seventh but unfortunately that was all they had and lost 10-7.

Sophomore Sarah Fantin had an impressive game going 2 for 4 with a home run an RBI and 2 runs scored. Natalie Douglas also turned in a 2 for 4 day with a run while Alexis Perrin went 2 for 3 with 3 runs and an RBI. Carley Kalbfleisch was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Isabella Pesina and Avery Pegg both contributed 1 and 2 RBIs respectively.

Kaylie Rickert started for SC4 and threw all 7 innings although it was in an unordinary way. She pitched the first 6 innings before being relieved by Brandi Bassett who didn't record an out before Rickert came back in and finished the game off. Rickert's final line was 7 innings, 12 hit, 6 runs (5 earned), 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Bassett's looked like 0 innings pitched, 2 hits, 4 runs, and 2 walks.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth affair between the Skippers and the Ocelots. SC4 got the scoring going with a run in the bottom of the first before giving up 3 to Schoolcraft in the second. Both teams added a run in the third and the Skippers drew a run closer in the fourth, however Schoolcraft got that ruin right back in the fifth. SC4 was down 5 to 3 in the sixth before the offense hung a 4 spot to take a 2-run lead into the seventh. All they needed to 3 outs before the Ocelots could score 2 runs, but they couldn't get it done. The Schoolcraft bats finally woke up and put up four runs which flipped that 2-run lead for the Skippers into a 2-run deficit. Down to their last 3 outs SC4 would score one and get the tying run to third but were unable to get her home.

Sarah Fantin led the way again going 3 for 5 with a triple, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs. Carley Kalbfleisch was a perfect 3 for 3 with a triple, a run, and 3 RBIs. Brandi Bassett turned in a 2 for 4 day with a run and an RBI while Isabella Pesina went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Avery Pegg was 2 for 3 including a clutch double in the 7th and a run scored.

MaKynna Saltzman pitched all 7 innings for the Skippers. She allowed 9 runs on 11 hits, 5 walks, and a strikeout. She was cruising keeping the Ocelots off balance for 6 innings until the finally figured her out in the seventh.

They will be back in action at home on Tuesday (Apr. 30) when they host Macomb Community College for a 3:00 PM double header.
