Softball: SC4 Drops the First Two Games of the Season

Piqua, OH – The Skippers opened up the 2024 spring season with a double head at Edison State Community College on Friday (March 1).

The Skippers were the first on the board in the opening game of the double header, scoring one in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately, that's all they would score as the Chargers scored nine unanswered to win 9-1 in six innings. SC4 collected 6 hits and MaKynna Saltzman scored the lone run.

Sophomore Kaylie Rickert started the game on the rubber. She went 5 innings surrendering 7 runs on 10 hits and 6 walks while striking out 4. She would hand the ball off to MaKynna Saltzman who would go the final 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 runs on 2 hits in the process.

Game two would be a similar story as the Skipper started off hot, scoring two runs in the first before surrendering 3 in the bottom half of the inning. The second inning is what ultimately did them in as they allowed 10 runs to the Chargers. SC4 would fun 14-5 in five innings. Freshman MaKynna Saltzman and Isabella Pesina were solid at the plate. Saltzman was 2-2 with 2 runs while Pessina was 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Mira Helsel contributed a run and two RBI's, hitting a home run in her first collegiate at bat.

Brandi Bassett would get the start pitching and go 2 innings giving up 13 runs on 9 hits and 6 walks. Kaylie Rickert took over for her and finished off the game throwing 2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

The Skippers get another crack at Edison State tomorrow (March 2) before heading down to Myrtle Beach, SC for a week of games.
