Matt Van Dyk’s college journey wasn’t your typical one. The 2012 graduate from Imlay City, two-time MHSAA All-state selection, and BWAC MVP initially signed to play basketball at Hope College but transferred to SC4 after the fall. He made the 2013-14 season with the Skippers a memorable one, averaging 16.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 %. He was named MCCAA 1st team, NJCAA Region XII All- Defensive Team and Eastern Conference Freshman of the Year.

“Matt was a tremendous athlete and a great fundamental basketball player; on the court he of course was as good as anyone in our conference/region,” said head coach Dale Vos. “One of my best on court memories of Matt was the steal and dunk to punctuate our win vs. Mott in the old SC4 Gym.  However, my biggest memory of Matt is how he was such a fierce competitor and yet such a kind and caring young man.  To this day when I talk to Matt it is rarely about basketball – it is about our faith or our families.”

After one season, the 6’5” forward decided to pursue his dream of playing basketball at Michigan State University. Van Dyk worked tirelessly, receiving MSU’s Tim Bograkos Walk-On award, and earned the chance to play for Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo. Prior to the 2016-17 season he received a scholarship. Van Dyk had the highest vertical leap on some powerful Spartan teams, which included several NBA players such as Matt Costello, Denzel Valentine and Miles Bridges. In 2015, he experienced their run to the Final Four and won the Big Ten Championship in 2016. Van Dyk’s monster alley-oop dunk off a backboard pass against Ohio State made ESPN SportsCenter Top 10.

“My favorite SC4 memories include all the ‘off the court’ memories,” Van Dyk said. “Bus rides, conversations, and laughs with my teammates before and after practices/ games in the locker room. Another great memory was beating Mott CC at home.”

Matt earned his degree in Agribusiness Management from MSU. He resides in Imlay City with his wife Rachel, who played volleyball at MSU, and their daughter Avery Joy.
