Lariah Stevens was an integral part of the SC4 women’s basketball team’s success in the early 2010’s. She was a part of the 2012-13 and 2013-14 teams that made it to the final four and were previously inducted into the Skippers Hall of Fame.

“My favorite memories of being a Skipper were making it to the final 4 two years in a row competing for a national championship and going undefeated in the conference during the 2013-14 season,” said Stevens.

Lariah’s impressive play led to a collection of awards including being named to the NJCAA District H All-tournament team as a sophomore and twice winning MCCAA All-conference honorable mention.

"In my opinion the definition of a hall of fame player is someone who impacts her team with playmaking ability, intelligence, instincts, and leadership. Lariah did that better than anyone in our time together.” Said hall of fame basketball coach Mike Groulx. “She was the ultimate teammate. She didn't care about stats; all that mattered was winning and winning at all costs. She was the calming factor on the basketball floor and her smile could light up any room that she walked into."

Following her time at SC4, Lariah accepted a full ride scholarship to continue playing basketball at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Detroit Mercy, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree. Her last stop was at Claflin University in South Carolina where she was a graduate transfer, playing basketball and earning her master’s degree in criminal justice.

Lariah moved back home and began work with the Detroit Police Department in 2017, spending a few years on patrol before being promoted to a detective. She has now worked in investigations for 5 years and as a homicide detective for 2 years. Lariah spends her free time as an assistant coach for the Detroit Cass Tech women’s basketball team and enjoys spending time with her wife Chelsea.

“I’m grateful for SC4 and coach Groulx who pushed me on days I couldn’t push myself,” said Stevens. “That ‘stubborn’ kid has now become a mature, well-rounded adult and I owe that to the people who believed in me here at SC4. This is where it all began.”
